The victims - two residents and a young lady - were shot, and the killer cut off their inhabitants and fingertips in order to prevent identification. The skates found on the woman's skin lead arkady to irina asanova, a cloakroom attendant at the film studio, who reveals that she claimed they were stolen and is not aware that they ended up with the victims. Arkady's problems escalate if his partner is shot while investigating davydova's apartment, and kirville's brother william, a detective of the new york police department, who is fluent in russian, arrives in the capital, intending to find and kill his brother's killer. Arkady tries to find out as much as possible from kirville in order to prove the identity of the corpse, without admitting that he suspects osborne. If irina is attacked in the moscow metro, arkady hides her in his own apartment, which has been empty since the moment, as well as his wife zoya left the business to only one of her own colleagues at the school where she teaches. Arkady reluctantly pays a visit to his personal parent, retired red army general renko, aka "stalin's favorite general", aka "the butcher of ukraine". The elder renko remembers that osborn was an oos officer attached to the red army during the nazi invasion who was tasked with interrogating three captured ss officers.
